#SMACKSundays - "And His Name Was Dilla"

For this week's "SMACK! Sundays" I wanted to do something for the Art4Dilla contest. Of course I could've went the easy route and just enter the Dilla pieces I did earlier this year but nah, that would've been too easy apparently. So inspired by an unused idea in my sketchbook that would've been a Dilla/Baatin tribute piece, I got to work on this new one.

Voting for the contest doesn't start til' Sept. 30 but of course that doesn't mean you should be able to get an early start. So if you're diggin' the piece go ahead and VOTE FOR IT!

....VOTE FOR IT NOW!

SMACK! Sundays

In the veins of people picking days to release new material (G.O.O.D. Fridays, Morale Mondays) I decided to put more pressure on my plate and have come up with *drum roll please* SMACK! Sundays! (That's right, let's cheer for original name titling! Yay!) So every sunday expect a new piece of art from me and what better way to start things off than by having something Kanye inspired?

And with that, here's another SMACK! SpeedComics. Vol. 14 to be exact (wow, I've made fourteen of these already? Impossible)...

EDITOR'S EDIT: You know...technically this could be apart of my The Art of Noise series. Just saying...

Riots x Women x Cut Ham

Here is the flyer and ticket designs for an upcoming show in Detroit "The Riot! Movement" happening on September 18th at the 5E Gallery, brought to you by the lovely Lala Triplett.
A simple flyer for an event out at Texas Southern University done for Identical Variant model Divania (b.k.a. Vannie)
And not exactly a commission, more so a Smack|Cut. This was the first involvement I had with Street Justice before moving on to do the two page comic. Their manager Jaja hit me up to see if I was interested in designing the cover for Go H.A.A.M and this was actually my mock-up to show the direction that I was going in. But in the end, SJ group member/designer Redd took care of the artwork duties and that left me to do the comic. And now the world is filled with dopeness upon dopeness.

The Reveal Of The Black Comix Book - A Picture Rendition

So a while back, like long long time ago in a galaxy far away, I met up with comic creator John Jennings at a lecture he was having in Flint about black artist in comics (What up Zo!). After the lecture, I got a chance to chop it up with him and even show him my portfolio. So I thought that was that. I mean I'm still in college (at the time) there ain't no way I'm bout to get a big chance.

Low and behold, some time later I get approached by him in a project. A project that would round up a stable of truly talented individuals in comics who just so happen to be African-American. Just imagine a new Justice League/Avengers type squad led by Luke Cage and John Stewert (The Black Green Lantern) and you'd picture this incredible list of artists. So of course why wouldn't I take up the chance? So I offer some artwork and bio and let John and Damian Duffy do their magic...

...A year and some change later, I get ring at the doorbell and a mysterious package has been left at my doorstep. I now bring you into the journey of opening that said package through the majesty of pictures!
"Oh shoot, it's a package! For me? How uncanny! Please don't be porn..."
"Wait...this might be a trap. Yakuza might have rigged this explode to cause war between DMX and Jet Li"
"Alright, must be delicate with this. Gotta use all the things I've learned in Metal Gear Solid 2. Don't...cut...blue...wire!"
"Whew. False alarm. Be easy, bladder. It's just bubble wrap..."
"I FRIGGIN' LOVE YOU, BUBBLE WRAP! BEAUTIFUL NON-EXPLOSIVE BUBBLE WRAP!"
"Oh snap! It's a book. A book with colors. Ooooh...colors..."
"OH SNAP! It's the  book! Because black people DO love to draw comics, dammit..."
"Let's see...Samax Amen is in here, Arie Monroe, Damian Duffy, Sean Anthony Mack...wait, what?"
"OOOOH SNAP, SON! That's me! I mean it's not me but someone drew me but clearly that's my artwork in there..."
"...and I mean it's kind of old now but hey, the book's been in the making for a while. Just be happy for me."
So all in all the Black Comix book came out dope. If you want to check out some amazing comic work from the urban side of things mixed with in-depth articles on the history of the artform then this book is the one for you.

...and I'm not just saying that because it has me (and The Revolutionary Times) in it. Honestly. Scout's honor. And it counts because my dad was a boy scout. Shapow.

Learn more about John Jennings, Damian Duffy, and the Black Comix by checking out the official website and the official Twitter  AND Facebook pages as well!

SIDENOTE: Another project that me and John have been developing is a 16 page horror comic. Just thought I'd put that out there. Ya know...just in case a year from now you see me say "Hey, remember that sidenote I talked about"...
